ABOUT THE EAST OF ENGLAND MODEL ROAD STEAMERS

Join a Club of Dedicated Model Road Steam Enthusiasts TODAY!

History
The club was founded in 2021 after two friends wanted to do something  during lockdowns, to preserve what was being lost, and to offer something not many clubs could, as many model engineering clubs are solely orientated around railway locomotives with little interest in road and stationary steam, and offered only the barebones of a basic boiler test.  Since lockdowns ended, the club has gained in strength, and is proving popular among model road steam engine owners, that include showmans engines, road locomotives, traction engines, steam tractors, road rollers steam lorries/wagons, and portable engines, and it would seem most of our members join because of the high standard of the boiler inspections out club offers its members.   We also cater for many members who own associated trailers and machines, such as wagons, living vans, water carts, threshing machines, balers, chaff cutters, flour mills, stone crushers, saw benches, etc. We also have members who model stationary (steam & petrol) engines and static boilers, and collect model steam toys such as Mamod and Wiliesco. We also have members who own or look after full size steam cars, traction engines and stationary engines.

Boiler Inspections and technical help & advice
FULL members benefit from boiler inspections of a professional grade, to PSSR2000 standards from a qualified engineer, but under the Model Engineering Test code. This means members boiler get the benefit from a thorough cold examination, which includes ultrasonic thickness testing, internal examination by camera, and inspection of plug threads and gauges, meaning not only can the boiler inspector be sure your boiler is in a safe condition, they are also able to give feedback, not only on the condition of the boiler, but whether the boiler needs descaling, boiler treatment levels, the cleanliness (ie how well you have washed your boiler out) and if any work is likely to be needed in the future, all put into a report for the owners records.  Our boiler inspectors cover Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, South Lincolnshire, North Essex and East Northamptonshire, and for a donation towards their traveling expenses, are more than willing to travel to your location at a convenient time. Members out side of these areas are still welcome, but owners of engines requiring boiler inspection will have to arrange a visit to us instead or be expected to cover full traveling costs.

Unlike many clubs, we refuse to carry out large numbers of tests on the same day as many clubs do, as the tests and examinations carried out by the EEMRSC are carried out to a very high standard. Our average time for a cold exam is around 90 minutes, with the steam test being around 30mins once full boiler pressure has been reached.  We have heard of some clubs where as many as 10 or 20 boilers are inspected in a 4 to 6 hour window. There is no way these boilers have had a true thorough examination, and we do not recommend that owners use such questionable examination services. One of the main goals of our club when it was founded was to raise the standard of the club boiler inspection, which for many other clubs, had failed to keep pace with the modern world, and were subsequently well below standard. Our club uses the experience, knowledge, equipment and techniques parable to those of commercial inspectors, to guarantee a high quality of model boiler examination, and received high praise from the N.A.M.E. Boiler registrar in 2023 for the standard, vigilance, and dedication our club has shown to increasing the quality that model engine owners get in regards to their boiler inspections, as these days, many owners are not engineers, and most engine owners do not know what is safe, and within the law (PSSR2000) owners of pressure vessels are required to employ competent 3rd parties to examine such devices to make sure they are safe for use.

Also unlike some clubs, we do not insist you have had to have been a member for a fixed length of time before benefiting from our inspection services. Membership to the EEMRSC entitles members to use all of our technical services from the time their membership has been confirmed.

Our clubs has two boiler inspectors, the chief boiler inspector who oversees most examinations, and also permitted to test boilers up to 1100B/L without a witness, and is responsible for the additional reports that our club issues with its boiler certificates. Our club has the great honour, in the fact that our deputy boiler inspector is a woman (how many other clubs can sport a woman boiler inspector?) and shows that our club is in no way sexist or backward in being inclusive to all.  Our deputy boiler inspector will often shadow our chief boiler inspector to gain more experience.

N/B In the unlikely event your boiler inspection will be carried out by our deputy boiler inspector, it should be noted she will require a witness (who is a club member but not the owner of the boiler) and can only examine boilers up to 550B/L

Members also get help and advice from other members as well as our technical advisor, which can range from the mechanical, to the technical, and can also include operation and maintenance.  Our club has also helped several members who own models to get their engines registered with the DVLA, which these days can take a lot of hard work and effort, with many being rejected for not having all the documents the DVLA requires, or the documents of kit companies, not having all the required details on for DVLA to prove an acceptable provenance.

News letters, Gatherings, and events.
Not everyone will be in need of boiler inspections or technical help, and our club also caters for this two. A reduced cost of membership is available for members who just wish to enjoy the non technical side of the club, such as the newsletters, meetings and gatherings.

Members also receive a quarterly newsletter, full of all sorts of appropriate things, from event dates, to reports on shows members have been to, and articles on projects. The newsletter also contains any important information that members might need to know, and also houses a number of sales items. We welcome input and photos from members to include in the publication.

We also hold gatherings for members and meet up at shows and private functions, and arrange steam up days and film shows throughout the year, as well as the obligatory Annual General Meeting each March when the members get to hear the club officers report on the previous year, and predictions and proposals for the forthcoming year as well as voting on the clubs officers.

Membership tiers and costs.

Our membership is priced at £30 for a FULL member, and £15 for Associate membership, and £40 for a group membership and membership is open to all adults (18+) with a interest in model road steam, engineering, and associated interests, regardless of whether you own a steam engine or not. For a membership form, email eemrsclub@hotmail.com for more information.
